Just put one foot in front of the other

Walking is the thing we humans do the best. We are constantly inundated with advice on how many steps we should take a day to lose weight and stay in shape. Why must all the fun be taken out of a simple thing that we have been doing since we were still in diapers?

As a society, we do not walk enough, choosing to get into our car instead. When we do walk we tend to cover the same routes with busy streets, cars, people and way too much noise. Sure its fun to sometimes mindlessly walk the neighborhood while listening to a podcast but is that really getting away from it all?

So what is hiking? It is nothing more than walking on a dirt or unpaved path away from people, streets, and noise. It can last a few minutes or multiple days. It can be miles from the nearest road or just across the street from a neighborhood. It is a place to walk where you are surrounded by nature, fresh air and calmness.

People who know that I love hiking but do not do it themselves often ask about how to get started, what gear they need, where to go, etc. Others do not understand the appeal of hiking. They are worried about unseen dangers, getting lost, or injuring themselves. Sure things can happen but you can also trip on the curb in your neighborhood. Being prepared and knowing your limits will make it a safe activity.

I will be posting more blogs with information on trails, equipment, and other fun things to get you out there hiking, camping and maybe even backpacking!

Today is a great day to start, you are not too old, too out of shape or to busy. Get out there and put one foot in front of the other and go for a walk or a hike! What equipment you need? Two feet and a heartbeat.

Up the hill not over it!

Your blog looks great! I’m not a hiker, but this might encourage me. I have zero excuses here in CA!
